UK's 'Pakistani Grooming Gangs' Scandal: Elon Musk attacks Labour MP Jess Philips, PM Keir Starmer on New Wave Global
I joined Rabia on another episode of New Wave Global to unpack the controversy surrounding the UK’s so-called “Pakistani grooming gangs” narrative, following Elon Musk’s recent attack on Labour MP Jess Phillips and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In this episode, I explain how UK police data shows that group-based child sexual exploitation is predominantly carried out by white men and their networks — yet public discourse continues to disproportionately target the Pakistani community. We discuss how Musk’s framing fuels far-right narratives and racial scapegoating, unfairly stigmatising Pakistani immigrants and BAME men more broadly.
I also explore the role of the media in reinforcing these biases through selective coverage, and how this ongoing distortion harms efforts to address child exploitation with nuance and facts.
UK Election: Muslim Vote Ignored by Starmer, Sunak | Economy, NHS, Immigration Big Concerns on New Wave Global
I joined Rabia on New Wave Global to discuss the upcoming UK election and the growing sense of disillusionment among Muslim and Pakistani communities. We explored Rishi Sunak’s declining poll ratings, the shifting political landscape, and the voting intentions of the British Pakistani diaspora.
I shared insights into the key issues shaping voter sentiment — from the economic crisis and NHS pressures to discriminatory immigration policies and the UK government’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza. Many in the Muslim community feel betrayed by mainstream parties’ silence on Palestine, prompting a rise in support for independent candidates.
You should always investigate what most people deem inconvenient on Her Kajal Won’t Smudge
I recently joined Shana on her brilliant podcast Her Kajal Won’t Smudge for a heartfelt conversation about my journey as a journalist. We spoke about what it’s like reporting from South Asia and conflict zones, and the emotional weight that comes with telling stories that often go unheard.
In this episode, I reflect on the importance of amplifying marginalized voices, the courage it takes to report inconvenient truths, and why I remain committed to shining a light on places the world too often overlooks. It was an honest and deeply personal discussion, and I’m grateful to have had the space to share it.
The Afghanistan Problem Set on Asia Stream
I’m featured in the second part of Asia Stream’s powerful special report on Afghanistan — a country at the heart of some of the most pressing humanitarian and geopolitical crises of our time. In this episode, we explore the devastating impact of international sanctions, the collapse of the Afghan economy, and what the future may hold for millions facing starvation.
Alongside regional ambassadors, resistance voices on the ground, and Washington insiders, I share my insights on the current realities in Afghanistan, drawing on my fieldwork and continued focus on the region. We unpack what meaningful international engagement could look like — one that supports the Afghan people without legitimizing the Taliban.
The Afghanistan Problem Set on Taking Apart Terror
I recently joined the Taking Apart Terror podcast to discuss the evolving security landscape in Afghanistan and its broader implications. In this episode, we delve into the resurgence of extremist groups, the challenges faced by journalists on the ground, and the international community's response to the unfolding crisis. Drawing from my experiences reporting in conflict zones, I share insights into the complexities of counterterrorism efforts and the importance of nuanced storytelling in such contexts.
